Inside The Durban Mass Shooting That Left Eleven Dead In South Africa

Eleven people lost their lives in a horrifying mass shooting at a homestead in the Ziko area of KwaMakhutha, south of Durban, South Africa.

The attack unfolded shortly before 11 p.m. on a Tuesday night. Gunmen stormed the residential property where a group of people, including a pregnant woman, had gathered. According to reports from KwaZulu-Natal provincial leaders and local broadcasters like eNCA, the assailants forced the victims into a single room before opening fire. Ten victims died at the scene, while an eleventh succumbed to injuries while being transported to the hospital. Three others sustained injuries, and the attackers even torched a vehicle belonging to one of the victims before fleeing.

KwaZulu-Natal Premier Thamsanqa Ntuli visited the scene to assess the situation and meet with local law enforcement and grieving families. The eThekwini District Tracing Team and KwaMakhutha police scrambled immediately to launch a manhunt, with acting police chief Puleng Dimpane activating a 72-hour tracking operation to hunt down the perpetrators.
